Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Clinic
The Pediatric Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Clinic specializes in caring for children and teens with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs), including eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic enteritis and eosinophilic colitis.
These rare conditions develop when high levels of eosinophils – a type of white blood cell that's involved in allergic reactions – build up in one or more parts of the digestive system. This can lead to difficulties with swallowing, eating and maintaining a healthy weight.
UCSF's program is the only one in Northern California that provides comprehensive care to children with EGIDs. Our team includes pediatric gastroenterologists, allergy specialists, dietitians and social workers.
Our Services
We perform a detailed review of our patients' medical histories, as well as physical exams, and offer recommendations for testing, such as endoscopy, radiology, skin patch tests and blood tests. A number of tests are available to help us identify foods that can trigger your child's condition, such as skin prick, blood and food patch tests.
If your child needs to follow a restricted diet, our registered dietitian can provide support and tools to help your family make healthy choices. We also help patients and their families connect with the EGID community, support groups and other resources.
The first visit typically lasts about two hours and may include a gastrointestinal assessment, skin testing, allergy diagnosis and creation of a personalized meal plan. Return visits are usually shorter.
