NICU Follow-Up Clinic

Babies born prematurely or with a critical illness are at risk for developmental delays. At our NICU Follow-Up Clinics we provide regular neurodevelopment assessments for infants who spent time in our neonatal intensive care units. We want to identify any developmental disabilities as early as possible, to help high-risk newborns get access to all the care and support they need, whether that means parent education, connecting families with community resources, or even sending a nurse to a patient's home. Long term, we want to help all patients reach their fullest potential.

In our ICN Follow-Up Clinic in San Francisco, kids are followed by a team that includes neonatologists, a developmental-behavioral pediatrician, a developmental psychologist, a pediatric nurse practitioner, a nurse coordinator, a social worker, a physical therapist and an occupational therapist. Providers seen at each visit will depend on specific patient needs. We also offer parent support and referrals to services, and serve as a liaison between community physicians and agencies involved with our patients' care.

At our High-Risk Infant Follow-Up Clinic in Oakland, we follow babies discharged from the NICU for the first three years of their lives. Highly trained nurses, mental health workers, social workers and developmental specialists work as a team to provide health and developmental assessments, monitoring and intervention. Through our Special Start Program, we offer ongoing home visits for Alameda County neonatal intensive care graduates after they go home.

To make it easier for families to access our care, we also see patients at several satellite clinics throughout the Bay Area. Services vary between the different locations. Please speak with your care team if you have questions.
