Dr. Garrett R. Roll is a general surgeon who specializes in abdominal organ transplantation for both adults and children, including liver and kidney transplant surgery from living donors. He also performs general surgery in patients with end-stage organ disease and patients with immunosuppression. His expertise includes using minimally invasive surgical techniques.

In research, Roll is interested in stem cell therapy and organ regeneration; normothermic machine perfusion of the liver (NMP-L), a method of preserving the liver during transport for transplantation; and the effectiveness of vaccinating transplant recipients for human papilloma virus (HPV). He is an investigator on several clinical trials looking at outcomes for organ transplant recipients, including those living with HIV.

Roll earned his medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at UCSF. After completing his training, he was a senior international fellow in liver transplant and retrieval at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, home to the busiest liver surgery unit in the United Kingdom. During this time, he gained experience with the NMP-L technology.

At UCSF, Roll is vice chair of the transplant quality improvement committee, serves on the clinical performance improvement committee and co-chairs the perioperative sustainability committee. Outside of UCSF, he serves on the American Journal of Transplantation's editorial board.
