Joan Jeung

MD MPH MS

Pediatrician
Child advocate, nature lover and believer in community

Dr. Joan Jeung is a pediatrician with special training in developmental and behavioral pediatric medicine as well as psychopharmacology (how drugs affect mood, behavior and other factors related to the mind). She cares for children with behavioral or developmental concerns, and has strong interests in immigrant health, health equity and trauma-informed care (an approach to treatment that considers possible effects of traumatic events on individuals).

Jeung's research interests focus on ways to address the unmet behavioral, developmental and mental health needs of children and teens, especially within primary care settings. She is also interested in how health care systems can better support early childhood development to prevent future problems, especially in patients exposed to childhood trauma or other significant adversity.

Jeung has a master's degree in health and medical sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her medical degree and completed a residency in pediatrics at UCSF. She completed a research fellowship in minority health policy at Harvard Medical School. She also earned a master of public health degree in health management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Jeung is active in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), serving as an executive committee member for the AAP Council on Healthy Mental and Emotional Development, as a member of its council on immigrant child and family health, and on the AAP California Chapter 1 mental health access committee. She is a proud Oakland resident who enjoys spending time in nature with her family.
