In 2014, UCSF and Children’s Hospital Oakland made the ambitious commitment to align our two institutions based on our shared mission of serving the health care needs of all children, regardless of race, religion or financial status.
Since then, the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals have grown into a comprehensive pediatric health system that leverages Oakland’s high-quality care delivery and research with UCSF’s renowned specialty care, biomedical research and health sciences education. The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals enterprise is now greater than the sum of its parts.
This affiliation has directly resulted in national recognition of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, which have ranked among the nation’s best for the past three years in all 10 specialties assessed by the U.S. News & World Report annual surveys of Best Children’s Hospitals – a feat neither hospital had previously achieved on its own. These specialties include the best program in Northern California in pediatric cancer, as well as nationally ranked programs in cardiology, diabetes, GI surgery, newborn specialty care, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
The two campuses in San Francisco and Oakland are known worldwide for basic and clinical research, including programs such as sickle cell research that serve our most vulnerable children, and are at the forefront of translating research into interventions for treating and preventing pediatric disease.
In the coming years, we will continue to invest in Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland and San Francisco so that, together, we can build an outstanding pediatric network serving the children of Northern California.
