Peter C. Kouretas

Dr. Peter C. Kouretas is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support for patients with heart disease. He serves as surgical director of the programs for pediatric heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

Kouretas' research focuses on the use of cardiac devices in heart transplantation and postoperative recovery. He also has an interest in care for adult patients with congenital heart disease, with a particular focus on advanced valve-sparing techniques in people with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects connective tissue (including that of heart valves).

Kouretas earned his medical degree and a doctorate in vascular biology at Georgetown University. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Virginia, followed by a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was chief resident. He completed fellowships in pediatric and congenital heart surgery and pediatric heart transplantation at Stanford University.

Prior to joining UCSF, Kouretas was chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and co-director of the pediatric heart center at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. He also directed the pediatric cardiac mechanical support program at Intermountain Healthcare Primary Children's Hospital.

Kouretas is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Western Thoracic Surgical Association and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
