About me

Dr. Gena Lewis is a pediatrician who provides primary care. She has special interests in caring for children with complex medical conditions as well as for children and their families who are recent immigrants. She believes that children are best cared for in the context of their families, communities and cultures. She is associate medical director for the primary care clinic at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.

Lewis' research focuses on best practices for educating future pediatricians on the social inequities of health care and how they can advocate for their patients' well-being.

Lewis earned her medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. She completed a residency in pediatrics at UCSF, serving as chief resident.

At UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Lewis serves as program coordinator for Reach Out and Read, a literacy program that gives each patient a new book during well-child visits. In 2006, she created the Medical-Legal Partnership project with East Bay Community Law Center, which offers pro bono legal services to the hospital's patients and their families.

Lewis served as president of California Chapter 1 of the American Academy of Pediatrics from 2013 to 2015, which honored her with awards in 2005, 2012 and 2018. She also received four awards for excellence in teaching.
