Dr. Vivien Nguyen is a pediatric gastroenterologist who cares for patients with aerodigestive disorders (conditions involving the respiratory system and upper digestive tract), intestinal failure (when the gut can't absorb the water and nutrients needed by the body) and disorders of gut-brain interaction (conditions related to the nervous system and marked by chronic digestive symptoms).
In research, Nguyen is involved in clinical trials to evaluate promising new treatments for intestinal disorders, including sucrase deficiency (lack of an enzyme that breaks down certain sugars) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She is active in ImproveCareNow, a collaborative network that includes doctors, researchers and parents working to improve care for children with IBD.
Nguyen earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Diego. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (an affiliate of UCSF), where she served as chief resident. She completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
