What is spinal fusion surgery?

Spinal fusion surgery is designed to fix the abnormal curve in the spine caused by severe scoliosis. It is the most common treatment for spine curves of 45 degrees or more. The goal is to correct the spine's abnormal curve and prevent the curve from getting worse over time. This is done by fusing the vertebrae, the bones in the spine, so that they are straighter and grow into one solid bone.

Can scoliosis be fixed?

There are three ways to treat or manage scoliosis – monitoring, bracing and surgery. The doctor will recommend an approach based on the degree of scoliosis and where your child is at in their physical development. The goal of any treatment will be to try and correct the curve by at least 50 percent.
