We encourage parents to stay with their child in the hospital as much as possible. If you can't be with your child, a grandparent or other familiar, loving adult is the next best thing.
Family Accommodations
At both our San Francisco and Oakland hospitals, most patient rooms can accommodate one overnight guest. For more information, see Patient Rooms.
In the hospital, you'll have access to amenities such as lounges, kitchens, showers, work areas and laundry facilities. To learn more, visit Family Amenities.
We understand that it's not always possible for a parent to stay in the hospital. If you need to return home, we will develop a communication plan with you to provide regular updates on your child's care.
If your child will be in the hospital for more than a few days and you don't live nearby, an assigned social worker can provide information on short-term lodging in the area. We will do everything possible to help you locate housing if needed.
Both our Oakland and San Francisco hospitals have facilities nearby that offer free or low-cost housing to eligible families during their child's treatment at UCSF. Local hotels, motels and short-term apartment rentals are also options. For more information, see our articles on off-site accommodations below.
